ProServe Liquor Staff Training

 

What is ProServe?

ProServe is Alberta's responsible liquor service and sales program. It's designed to help ensure that liquor is sold and served according to law and AGLC policies, and in a way that keeps customers, guests and others safe from alcohol-related harms. Other Canadian provinces have similar responsible liquor service programs.

ProServe can help licensees and industry workers:

  • Curb the problem of underage drinking
  • Reduce alcohol over-consumption
  • Reduce impaired driving, and
  • Reduce the risk of violence

ProServe Course

What topics are covered?

Successfully completing ProServe will help you understand:

  • Your duty of care to your customers or guests
  • What your legal responsibilities are when serving or selling liquor
  • How alcohol affects the body
  • How liquor can affect people's behaviour
  • How to tell when a customer or guest appears intoxicated
  • How to work as a team to sell and serve liquor responsibly
  • How to refuse liquor sales or service to minors, and people who appear intoxicated
  • Illegal activities that can happen at licensed premises and what you must do to keep people safe

ProServe is a social responsibility training program. It does not include information on all liquor laws and AGLC policies.

 

 

Who needs to take this program?

ProServe certification is mandatory for full- and part-time workers:

  • In positions where liquor is provided under the authority of a Class A, B, D, E, F and Duty-Free licence (excluding Class D - Sacramental Wine Resale licence):
    • Licensed premises owners who are responsible for directly managing a licensed premises;
    • Licensed premises managers, supervisors, retailers, bartenders, servers, greeters, hosts and delivery service drivers;
    • Limousine and bus licensees, drivers and attendants;
    • Large-format bike operators and attendants;
    • Security staff (directly employed or contracted by the licensee), and owners and managers of a company contracted to provide security.
  • In positions where liquor is provided under the authority of an SEL Public Resale - Commercial liquor licence:
    • Managers, supervisors, bartenders, servers and drink ticket sellers;
    • Security staff (directly employed or contracted by the licensee); and
    • Owners and managers of a company contracted to provide security.
  • In positions where liquor is provided under the authority of an SEL Public Resale - Community liquor licence:
    • The licensee and designate(s); and
    • A minimum of 25% of all bartenders/servers on-site.
  • Persons registered with AGLC as a liquor agency and their employees, or a third-party agent acting on their behalf, whose duties include the sampling of liquor products.

What is the timeframe to complete the program? 

Learners are given 30 days from the date and time of registration. You may enter and exit the program, sign in and out of your account, etc. as often as you like within 30 days from the date and time of registration. Your program access ends on the 30th day. After 30 days, you will need to reregister and start the course from the beginning. 

Is there an exam and what is the passing grade? 

Yes and a minimum score of 80% is required to pass. 

How many exam attempts are available? 

Five (5) attempts are given with each registration. Reviewing the program topics before retaking the test is recommended.

Is there a cost for the program? 

There is a non-refundable charge of $25.00 plus GST per course or voucher.

English

Need proof of certification? No problem.  

Licensee staff must provide proof of SMART Programs certification at the request of an AGLC Inspector. Proof of certification includes:

  • a printed certificate or
  • a clear digital image (e.g., screen shot) of the certificate saved on the staff member's mobile device.

Proof of certification can be accessed from of your AGLC training account. Print your certificate or save an image of it to your mobile device.
